Khuruthang is a small town in Punakha District in western Bhutan, situated along the Punatsangchhu River in the fertile Punakha Valley. It serves as the main township of Punakha and contains residential areas, shops, government institutions, schools, and a local market. The town is surrounded by hills, villages, and cultivated land, with rice fields visible across parts of the valley. Khuruthang is also an important stopping point for travelers visiting nearby Punakha, making it a practical base for exploring the wider valley and its religious and natural attractions.
Khuruthang’s cultural identity is closely connected with the Buddhist traditions of Punakha, one of Bhutan’s important religious regions. Khuruthang Lhakhang stands near the town center and serves the local community, while the surrounding valley contains numerous monasteries, temples, and sacred sites. Nearby Sangchhen Dorji Lhuendrup Nunnery is known for its large bronze statue of Avalokiteshvara and its views across the Punakha and Wangdue valleys. The local market also provides a glimpse of everyday Bhutanese life, with farmers and residents trading produce and other goods.
The town is particularly useful as a gateway to the attractions of the Punakha Valley. Punakha Dzong, one of Bhutan’s most important architectural landmarks, lies only a few kilometers away at the meeting point of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. The surrounding countryside includes rice terraces, orchards, forested hills, and traditional villages. Visitors can also reach Chimi Lhakhang, a Buddhist temple associated with Drukpa Kunley, from Khuruthang. The Punatsangchhu River provides opportunities for rafting and kayaking, with stretches of the valley offering views of farmland and mountain slopes.
Food in Khuruthang reflects the cuisine of Bhutan, where red rice, chilies, cheese, buckwheat, vegetables, and meat feature prominently. Ema datshi, a dish of chilies cooked with cheese, is one of the country’s best-known foods and is commonly served with rice. Fresh produce from the Punakha Valley is also sold through local markets, including vegetables and citrus fruits grown in the region. A distinctive feature of Khuruthang is its role as Punakha’s principal commercial center: although the town itself is compact, it connects the valley’s farming communities, religious sites, river activities, and major cultural landmarks.
